Do I qualify for this scholarship?
To qualify for this scholarship, a student must:
What is the deadline for application?
The deadline for student applications is April 3, 2018.
How large are scholarships?
We cannot offer full scholarships, unfortunately. There is no set scholarship size, but most are a few hundred dollars.
Can I deduct donations to this scholarship from my taxes?
Yes! Contributions go to the National Speech & Debate Association before going to students, which means you can deduct donations from your taxes.
How much of my donation goes to helping kids?
We are run by volunteers, so our overhead is <5% of revenue.
I am attending a different camp than the five partner institutes. Can I receive a scholarship?
Unfortunately, we cannot offer scholarships to camps besides GMIF, CBI, GSD, ISD, and UTNIF this summer. We hope to expand the number of partner institutions for Summer 2019.
I am attending camp for debate or a non-IE event. Can I receive a scholarship?
Yes! If your camp is one of our partner institutes, the event that you are attending for will not impact your eligibility.
Does competitive success matter for receiving a scholarship?
Literally not at all.
Does my family have too high an income to qualify?
There is no maximum income for the families of qualifying students; however, students with greater financial need will be prioritized.
What information do I need to submit?
In addition to the questions on the form under the "Application" tab, your application will not be considered complete until your family's 2017 1040 tax form has been emailed to email@example.com. We use the 1040 to verify income; that information will not be shared beyond the selection committee.
Does applying for this scholarship to a given institute also mean I will be accepted at that institute?
No. Students must be accepted at an institute separately. Students who have not been accepted to an institute or are on a waitlist will not qualify for scholarships.
Can I apply for a scholarship for my transportation to a summer institute?
We cannot offer scholarships for transportation. We can only offer assistance in offsetting some of the cost of tuition at our partner institutes.
Who will read my application?
The selection committee is made up of current and former high school and college competitors and coaches, as well as staff members of the National Speech & Debate Association.
The 2018-2019 season will be the first season I compete. Do I qualify for a scholarship?
Unfortunately, we can only offer scholarships to students who have competed during the previous season.
Are the names of scholarship recipients made public?
No. All recipients are totally anonymous. Only SFISF and the student's camp will know they received a scholarship. (We may ask recipients for testimonials in the future, but these would be completely optional).
